news from idec (yokohama industrial development corporation)

an introduction to idec's international projects

Acknowledging the increasing globalization of the world economy, the Yokohama Industrial Development Corporation (IDEC) will continue to encourage and support international business exchange. In cooperation with Yokohama's representative offices in Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Frankfurt, and New York, IDEC will promote a number of international projects over the coming year.

In addition to facilitating business-delegation exchanges with Hong Kong and Taiwan, the Southeast Asia division of IDEC is making plans for BusinessNet, an event in Malaysia that will bring together Yokohama companies interested in expanding to Southeast Asia, Japanese companies that already have operations in Southeast Asia, and local Malaysian businesses to exchange information and carry out business discussions. The event promises to be a valuable introduction for companies thinking about Southeast Asia, as well as a starting point for new business partnerships among the participants.

BusinessNet, which targets a different country each year, will be held in Kuala Lumpur this year, where the City of Yokohama maintains an office.

The China Division, building on the sister-city relationship between Yokohama and Shanghai, is planning a range of economic exchanges in the coming year.

For example, business delegations from both cities will visit each other to discuss opportunities in several key industries, including multimedia, automotive parts, and software. The division is also forming a study group for Yokohama companies interested in doing business in China. The study group will hear from guest speakers experienced in building business in China about local management styles and the challenges of establishing operations there.

Likewise, the European division is forming the European Union Environmental Business study group to research environment-related devices and technology in Europe. The group will invite experts to discuss case studies of environment- related devices from Europe that have been introduced to Japan and identify products and technology that meet Japan's unique needs. The gro up is also planning to attend Pollutec, an industry trade conference in Lyon, France, to see new products and hold talks with local companies.

The North America division is proceeding with development of the U.S.-Japan Business Link System, which will enable IDEC to provide information to and about US and Japanese companies interested in doing business with each other.

By taking advantage of the New York office's central location and by strengthening relationships with the U.S. state government offices in Japan, IDEC plans to deliver a system that makes introductions between U.S. and Japanese companies faster and more efficient.
