Since opening as an international commercial port in 1859, Yokohama has been continually expanding its role as a center of international commerce and culture. Yokohama is now Japan's busiest international port and second largest city, with a highly educated population of 3.3 million people. Committed to internationalizing its economic growth, Yokohama intends to be Japan's most open business community. As part of the city's plan to firmly establish itself as Japan's premier global gateway and center of high-technology industry, Yokohama has developed an infrastructure and support system that welcomes international businesses.
Yokohama lies just 18 miles southwest of central Tokyo, at the heart of the Japanese archipelago. The attractions of doing business in Yokohama are many: its convenient location (near to both Narita and Haneda international airports, and a stop on the bullet train), its low land prices and rental costs (often less than half of Tokyo prices), its educated work force (28.4% with university degrees), its attractive environment (with 1,823 parks), its cultural vibrancy (home to Japan's largest Chinatown, and 28 museums), and of course, the city government's financial support system for foreign companies.
Currently, more than 130 foreign companies have chosen Yokohama for their head offices, and many more have research or manufacturing operations there. These include such prestiguous names as Ford, Gateway 2000, Bosch, and Olivetti.
You and your business are welcome in Yokohama!
