ERROR MSGA FEW WORDS ABOUT THE KEIHIN WATERFRONT:
The Keihin Waterfront District is part of the Yokohama-Tokyo Region where one-third of the country's population lives and it is one of the world's most prominent industrial areas. The Keihin Waterfront Area has major plants for oil, petrochemicals, steel, electric machinery and automobiles. Various sizes of plants are located in the district and surrounding areas, as well as the most advanced research facilities in the world to support the industries.

The Keihin Waterfront District is located approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Narita International Airport, which is the gateway to Japan, and may be accessed from most of the world's major cities. The Keihin Waterfront is also next to Japan's largest domestic airport - Haneda. Proximity to Haneda of course provides extremely easy access to other cities in Japan. The area is also easily accessible from various places in Japan by railway such as the Shinkansen Bullet Train and highways.

ERROR MSG As a result of an invitation by Yokohama City Hall, Riken Yokohama Physical and Chemical Research Institute opened in Yokohama's Keihin Waterfront District on October 1, 2000. In Yokohamas Suehiro Area in Tsurumi Ward, they are currently building what will one day be the world's largest research & development institution.

The Riken Physical and Chemical Research Institute is the largest, oldest and most prestigious research organization in Japan. This institute was first founded in 1917 (Taisho 6) as a private research foundation known as RIKEN. After World War II in 1958, it was reorganized as a public corporation under the jurisdiction of the Science and Technology Agency, since when it has engaged in wide-ranging research activities that span basic to applied science. Riken conducts various research exchange programs with 10 universities in Japan and over 70 research institutes outside of Japan.

The Riken Yokohama Institute will eventually include 3 research institutes.
1. Genomic Science Institute The Genomic Sciences Institute will consist of 6 research groups: Genome Exploration, Protein, Human Genome, Mouse Functional Genomics, Plant Function Genomics and Bioinformatics. The six groups will supervise 18 teams. More than 250 scientists will research the structure and function of proteins and genes which are the building blocks of all life, using one of the world's largest NMR (Nucleus Magnetic Resonance) machines.
